When my wife’s massage therapist called and insisted that I attend her next appointment without telling her, I assumed something had gone terribly wrong. But three days later, I found myself hiding behind a folding screen, secretly listening to a conversation I was never supposed to hear. What I discovered that afternoon shattered my heart and revealed a painful truth my wife had been hiding for five months.
For 14 years, my wife, Lina, had been the calmest person in our family.
She was the one who kept everything together, even when life threw unexpected challenges our way. When our daughter, Ellie, broke her arm after falling off her bicycle, Lina remained calm while I completely panicked.
When I lost my job during a company restructuring, she spent three consecutive nights helping me update my résumé instead of worrying about our financial situation.
No matter how difficult things became, she always seemed to know what to do.
That was why I immediately became concerned when her massage therapist called me unexpectedly on a Tuesday afternoon.
My mind went straight to the worst possibilities. Had Lina been involved in a car accident? Had she fallen? Was there some kind of medical emergency?
People don’t usually receive mysterious phone calls from their spouse’s massage therapist unless something has gone terribly wrong.
“Nolan?” I asked after introducing myself.
There was a brief pause.
“Jake, there’s something you need to know.”
Something about the nervousness in his voice made my stomach tighten.
“What happened?”
“It’s not something I can explain over the phone.”
My grip tightened around the steering wheel.
“Is Lina okay?”
“Physically, yes.”
His answer should have reassured me.
Instead, it made me even more anxious.
Physically?
What exactly was that supposed to mean? If she wasn’t injured, what was he trying to tell me?
“What are you talking about?”
Another silence followed.
Then he said something that would replay in my mind for the next three days.
“I think you should come to her next appointment.”
“What?”
“If I were you, I’d want to hear it myself.”
Before I could ask another question, he ended the call.
The rest of that day felt strange. The following day was even worse. By the third day, I was convinced I was losing my mind.
Meanwhile, Lina behaved as though absolutely nothing was wrong.
